Holidays bring spike in home burglaries

Police in several South Shore communities are seeing a rash of home break-ins in the weeks leading up to Christmas. While police say the economy may be a contributing factor, they put most of the blame on drug addiction. The wave has hit Weymouth particularly hard. Fuller said police have received reports of 243 break-ins at homes and businesses this year compared with 186 last year. And the number has been increasing in the last few weeks, including five home burglaries Monday alone.

Health-care provider in North Quincy proposes $8M expansion project

South Cove Community Health Center, the largest Greater Boston health center targeting Asian-Americans, is planning an $8 million expansion of its offices in North Quincy. The proposal calls for a three-story, 20,000-square-foot building behind the center’s current location at 435 Hancock St.

Fraud scheme leads to prison sentence for former Weymouth woman

A former Weymouth woman was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to 51 months of imprisonment for her role in a bizarre fraud scheme in which she and her husband are believed to have deliberately eaten glass in order to get insurance payments.
