Sen. Scott Brown joined local representatives Thursday to tour the worst of the damage in Scituate, visiting a strip of homes in the Sand Hills neighborhood that were torn apart and flooded when a section of the sea wall collapsed into the sea during the storm.

Up all night? Not likely

Spending New Year’s Eve with The Three Stooges this year? An aging population, stricter drunken driving laws and changing tastes in entertaining have redefined expectations for a New Year’s Eve celebration.

All-inclusive menus, midnight toasts and open bars are increasingly giving way to early meals and low-key affairs at home.

Silent Chef in Scituate counts on a steady diet of New Year’s Eve business from the stay-at-home crowd. The catering company has nearly 20 orders to serve small get togethers.

“They’re not going out as much because of the drinking and all of those issues, so they’re staying home,” co-owner Kim Luque said.

Spending the holiday at home swells business at restaurants with take-out service. Sweet Lemons, a Thai restaurant in Weymouth, expects close to 100 take-out and delivery orders Friday, compared with 30 on a typical evening.

“We’re (normally) open until 10, but if people are still ordering we’ll stay open until midnight,” co-owner Paul Srisuwanporn said.

While Boston’s First Night celebration draws close to a million celebrants, suburbanites disinclined to trek into the city have fewer options. Quincy ended its outdoor New Year’s Eve tradition in 2007 because of financial concerns.

After disappointing attendance at last year’s New Year’s Eve party, Lombardo’s banquet hall in Randolph canceled this year’s event and booked the space for a private party.

The neighboring Vincent’s nightclub, which has a capacity for 1,000 revelers and attracts a younger crowd, continues to host a public party that is well-attended, sales consultant Catherine McNamara said.

Port 305 restaurant at Quincy’s Marina Bay is still accepting reservations for a New Year’s party including a party and champagne toast, owner Kris Henriksen said.

Henriksen’s Siros restaurant at Marina Bay is fully booked for its own New Year’s Eve party, but many older patrons don’t linger until the ball drops in Times Square.

“We get some people who come in at 4 p.m.,” she said. “A lot of people come in and have dinner and then they go home for New Year’s.”

Still, some venues are testing the public’s appetite for a traditional full-scale New Year’s Eve bash. For $85 a head, guests at South Shore Country Club’s Greenside Grille can partake in hors d’oeuvres, a dinner buffet, dessert and champagne toast.

“They still have tickets available, but we’ve been getting a lot of calls today,” sales manager Mary Santosuosso said Thursday.

Abby Park in Milton got permission to stay open until 1 a.m. and hired a disc jockey to jazz up its second-annual New Year’s Eve dinner. Reservations were still available on Thursday.

“Last year we did a prix fixe menu tied in with a champagne toast,” owner Vance Welch said. “I think people wanted a little more choice.”
