I am obsessed with the Shamrock Shake at McDonald's, but I know it has hundreds of calories and lots of fat too. Do you have any ideas for how I could kick a craving for the minty milkshake I adore so much without wasting a ridiculous amount of calories???
Sham-A-Lot Lover | | | | | | Hi Sham-A-Lot Lover, Good news! Just because you asked (and also because tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day), I present to you... the super-official HG Shamrock Shake swap! It's one of the most requested HG recipes ever... Shamrock 'n' Roll Shake PER SERVING (entire recipe): 175 calories, 4g fat, 150mg sodium, 29g carbs, 2g fiber, 13.5g sugars, 7.5g protein -- PointsPlus™ value 5* Ingredients: 1 tbsp. sugar-free French vanilla powdered creamer (like the kind by Coffee-mate) 3/4 cup light vanilla soymilk 1/2 cup fat-free vanilla ice cream (like Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Fat Free) 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract 2 drops green food coloring 1 no-calorie sweetener packet (like Splenda or Truvia) 1 1/2 cups crushed ice (8 - 12 ice cubes' worth) Directions: Combine creamer with 1 tbsp. hot water and stir to dissolve. Transfer to a blender. Add all other ingredients to the blender, and blend at high speed until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy! MAKES 1 SERVING BTW, if you make this with light ice cream instead of fat-free, your shake will have 190 calories, 7g fat, and a PointsPlus™ value of 5*. Not bad. Happy St. Patrick's Day, people! | | | | | Hi HG,
First-time emailer, longtime fan! I'm dying to know... What's a typical day of eating for you? Just wondering...
Curious in Georgia | | | | | | Hi Curious Georg', I actually get asked this a LOT. I think some people assume that I only eat the products I write about. That's definitely not true. Although I do enjoy those items, my diet is mostly made up of lean protein, fresh fruit, tons of vegetables, and other stuff that isn't exactly interesting enough for "Spotted on Shelves..."! That being said, here's what a full day of meals and snacks looks like for me... In the morning, I will have an egg mug made from Egg Beaters Original, a wedge of Laughing Cow Light cheese, and whatever veggies I have on hand. I'll usually have a Fuji apple, a banana, or an orange as well. Oh, and a special drink I make every morning with FRS Low Cal Orange Concentrate, crushed ice, water, and a few ounces of Trop50 Pineapple Mango. (This drink ROCKS!) For lunch, it's often a big salad of chopped romaine lettuce and grilled chicken. I'll usually have it plain (I'm not a huge fan of dressing), but sometimes I'll spritz on some sprayable salad dressing or add a splash of balsamic vinegar. If I don't have a salad, I like to whip up a concoction of some sort with broccoli slaw and lean protein (like this one!). I almost always have a snack before or after lunch (sometimes both!). If I'm traveling, my snack choices are things like apples, almonds, jerky, bars (I love Kind and Luna Protein bars!), and VitaTops. If I'm at home or at the HG HQ, I also like to snack on light string cheese or Mini Babybel Light. (Click here for more about my favorite snacks.) Dinner is often sushi (light on the rice) or some sort of lean protein (I love fish, chicken, lean steak, etc.) with veggies. I tend to avoid the bread basket, pasta, potatoes, rich sauces, and oily stuff. I've been known to shove a fork into a dessert occasionally... Okay, a few times a week! But I try not to overdo it with restaurant desserts; one or two medium-sized bites is my limit! BTW, if you're reading this and you're new to HG, you should know that I'm not a nutritionist, and I'm not suggesting that everyone should eat like I do -- this is just what works for me! | | | | | | | Have a question for Hungry Girl?
