 | IIGG Presents: New Global Governance Monitor Component on Armed Conflict Dear Colleague: I am delighted to announce the launch of the latest component of the Global Governance Monitor, on violent conflict. Preventing armed conflict, keeping peace, and rebuilding war-torn states remain among the most challenging problems for the international community. Every year, at least 250,000 people die in armed conflicts, most of which occur within rather than between states. Armed conflict and its aftermath corrode virtually every aspect of society: law and order, economic development, education, healthcare, human rights, natural-resource extraction, and the environment. Multilateral action can be an effective response to armed conflict, but both international and regional approaches need to be enhanced and coordinated if they are to effectively address the range of conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and rebuilding problems facing the world. The Global Governance Monitor is an online, multimedia guide that tracks, maps, and evaluates multilateral efforts to address global challenges. The Monitor is a co-production of the International Institutions and Global Governance (IIGG) program at the Council on Foreign Relations and the production studio MediaStorm. This new component of the Monitor features: - A short film that explains the challenge of improving global conflict prevention and response.
- A graphic timeline tracing the history of initiatives seeking to mitigate violent conflict, from 1814 through the present.
- An issue brief summarizing the current status of the multilateral conflict prevention and response regime (including gaps in the regime and related U.S. policy).
- A matrix cataloging all relevant international agreements, mechanisms, institutions, and initiatives related to violent conflict, including their coverage, strengths, and shortcomings.
- An interactive map detailing the global challenge of violent conflict, as well as the main international agencies that manage these challenges.
- A list of resources, including foundational texts, essential documents, recent articles, and relevant CFR scholars on the subject.
This, along with the Monitor's five previous components on nuclear nonproliferation, finance, oceans, climate change, and public health, can be viewed here: www.cfr.org/ggmonitor.
