Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas exercised their First Amendment free speech rights when they picketed the Maryland funeral of a Marine killed in Iraq. The soldier’s father sued the group for the pain they caused his family. Now, Marshfield state Rep. James Cantwell wants picketers, protesters or anyone creating a disturbance to stay 1,000 feet from a funeral, burial or memorial service. His bill strengthens the current statute, which makes groups keep a distance of 500 feet, and would be in effect two hours before and after a funeral.
