First day at correctional officer training academy leaves student officers speechless

Senior Drill Instructor Dwayne Fortes, an officer in the jail’s maximum security wing, introduced his team of drill instructors to the 52 men and women who comprise the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department’s 49th Basic County Correctional Officer academy.

The instructors roared into the class like a pack of angry dogs, berating the recruits on everything from the clothes they wore to the hairstyles they sported. Insults flew. Surnames were belittled.

The ultra in-your-face introduction to the 10-week program lasted most of the morning, with recruits alternately dashing outdoors for quick calisthenics and crowding into the stall of the men’s room for a lesson in claustrophobia.
